Martin Keown rates Liverpool’s chances of winning the Champions League
_
Martin Keown insists Liverpool can win the
Champions League this season but has warned
Jurgen Klopp that they will not triumph ‘on emotion alone’.
_
Liverpool, third in the Premier League , progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League this week with a stunning and surprising 5-1 aggregate victory over Manchester City.
_
City are on the verge of winning the domestic title in style but were outplayed over two legs as Liverpool reached the final-four for the first time since 2008.
_
Former Arsenal and England defender Keown told the Daily Mail: ‘You can’t win the Champions League on emotion alone.
_
‘It sounds strange, but winning the first leg against City so emphatically could’ve turned into a disaster for Liverpool.
_
‘When Gabriel Jesus scored inside two minutes in Manchester, it looked as if one of Liverpool’s greatest European nights may have just set up one of their worst.
‘Instead, they kept their composure and slowly forced their way back into the game, while Pep Guardiola sat in the stands.
_
‘Klopp showed this week he has the tactical brain and squad management to go alongside his more celebrated ability to galvanise a team.
_
‘They’re the top scorers in this season’s Champions League, they’re the only unbeaten team and, for the semi-final, they have the Anfield factor. If Klopp continues to control games from the touchline like this, of course they can win.’
_
Keown also said that Roma would be a dream draw for Liverpool, who will be hoping to avoid defending champions Real Madrid until the final in Kiev.
‘Roma’s comeback against Barcelona will go down in their history, but throughout sport, you see underdogs struggle to repeat landmark performances after such emotion-sapping results,’ he added.
_
‘Real Madrid would be the worst-case scenario. They have won three of the last four Champions Leagues and are the benchmark for European football now.
_
‘The only crumb of comfort Liverpool could take if they drew Real is the benefit of facing them at Anfield. Real have shown they are the masters of finals.
_
‘Their core of players has changed little in their Champions League winning run: Sergio Ramos, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo, they all know how to win this trophy.
_
‘Liverpool don’t have that same level of experience. Seven players who started the Europa League final are still at the club, but that just isn’t the same.’
_
