BREAKING: NYSC Speaks On N49,800 Allowance For Corps Members

Against all expectations that the Federal Government may commence payment of new N49,800 allowance to serving corps members nationwide, there are indications that the approval is delayed as the Federal Government is yet to take a decisive decision.

In response to a short message enquiry by Daily Independent, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, Director, Press and Public Relations, NYSC National Headquarters ‘there is no official pronouncement from the Federal Government’.

It will be recalled that the Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Suleiman Kazaure, was quoted to have disclosed last week in Abuja during a visit to the FCT orientation camp Kubwa that the scheme received a letter from the presidency where the Finance Minister was also copied to that effect.

Since the news broke, hopes of corps members nationwide to receive the new allowance has heightened as many in their imagination already pegged the proposed new allowance at N48,900 monthly.

To this end, the NYSC facebook platform has been awashed with corps members making enquiry as to when the new allowance regime comes into effect.

News of possible upward review of allowance paid to corps members is not a recent development as the immediate past DG, Brigadier-General Johnson Olawunmi, had assured corps members of upward review before he left office.

Corps members presently receive N19,800 as monthly allowance in addition to stipend paid by their employers.

With the rising cost of living in the country, corps members with Places of Primary Assignment in the city centres have had to live from hand to mouth.

Those provided accommodation by their employers but lived in rented apartments in a city like Lagos may have to path with a minimum of N5,000 monthly for house rent alone.

Apart from feeding, corps members that are enrolled for Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) which may require payment, though at a subsidized rate, from the meagre allowance.

It is on record that corps members that are deployed to states and local government establishments are paid a paltry stipend in addition to the N19, 800 allowance paid by the FG.

In the wake of the 2016 recession, many state governments suspended payment of extra stipend to corps members.
