NYSC Takes Biometric Clearance To North Central

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has extended the usage of biometrics for the clearance of corps members to North Central zone of the country..

This is part of the innovative deployment of ICT solutions to enhance operational efficiency of the scheme. The extension of the new approach to the North-Central followed its successful piloting in FCT and Lagos State as well as its commencement in all states of the North-West, South-East and South-West.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a training workshop for NYSC field officers from the zone on the handling of the biometric clearance, which commenced Wednesday in Minna, Niger State, Director-General, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, said the workshop was aimed at giving participants requisite knowledge for the success of the clearance system.

Kazaure, who was represented by Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mrs. Victoria Okakwu, stated that the scheme’s migration from the manual system of mobilisation, deployment, registration, and relocation of corps members to an ICT-driven one, had helped to eliminate sharp practices as well as reduce error and workload of staff, corps members and other stakeholders.

“The introduction of the use of biometrics for mobilisation and registration of corps members at orientation camps has not only helped in fast-tracking the process, but also reduced impersonation and registration of ineligible graduates.

‘“Its success reaffirmed our determination to adopt it in the clearance of Corps members both during the weekly Community Development Services and the monthly clearance,” he added.

Earlier in her welcome address,Director of ICT, Mrs. Christy Uba, said the training of local government inspectors and other field officers on the use of biometrics, which is being conducted on zonal basis, had been yielding great results, with commendations from various stakeholders. Uba explained that the NYSC LGA Attendance and Clearance System was designed to keep record of absenteeism as well as checkmate truancy, impersonation and other vices that could undermine the operations of the scheme.

“It is imperative to note that the Biometric Attendance and Clearance System is being updated from time to time based on inputs received from end users.

This has positively altered the performance of the application overtime,” she said. The Director, who described the use of ICT as a global phenomenon, assured that the NYSC would continue to be a seeding ground for digital innovation. In her remarks, the NYSC Niger State Coordinator, Mrs. Theresa Arokoyo, thanked the management for organizing the training; noting that its gains would be enormous.
