Governor Moves To Upgrade Enugu NYSC Orientation Camp

Worried by the dearth of facilities at the Enugu State NYSC Orientation Camp, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has spoken of plans by the state government to embark on massive infrastructural upgrade of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp at Awgu Local Government Area of the state.

The governor, who unveiled the plans at the orientation camp during the swearing-in ceremony of 2017 Batch ‘B’ Stream I of corps members deployed to undertake the compulsory one-year national service in the state, said despite the dwindling resources, the state government would strive to meet its statutory obligations to the scheme and  provide the enabling environment for corps members to effectively discharge their mandate.

“The state government will continue to recognise and reward those of you who are outstanding during the service year,” Ugwuanyi pledged, saying: “We are also aware of the challenge of inadequate facilities in the orientation camp and are taking steps to launch an intervention programme to upgrade the camp.

The state governor, who was represented by the Chairman NYSC State Governing Board, and the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Joseph Udedi, charged the corps members to live up to the objectives of the scheme, which he said include championing national integration as well as harnessing the creative and productive energies of Nigerian youths for national development.

The NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Ahmed Wada lkaka, disclosed that at the close of registration, a total number of 2,208 corps members were registered, comprising 1,080 male and 1,128 female members.

Wada, who commended the state government for various assistance and interventions, further solicited the state government’s urgent intervention for the renovation of some hostel blocks, perimeter fencing, mini-water scheme and electricity transformer, some of which, he said were captured in the state’s 2017 capital budget.

The state coordinator assured the corps members that the orientation camp was fashioned to avail them the opportunity to interact with their contemporaries from other cultural, social and economic backgrounds.

He, however, warned that indiscipline would not be tolerated in the camp as stiff sanctions would be visited on offenders.

The NYSC oath of allegiance was administered on the corps members by the Chief Judge of state, Justice Ngozi Emehelu, who was represented by Hon. Justice A.  O. Onovo, the Judge of the state High Court.

The state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Udedi, who had earlier congratulated the corps members for successfully completing their various academic programmes, however, informed them that assessment for selection of award winner begins from the orientation camp.
