Here are some Earth facts that you might like

1. The Earth’s rotation is gradually slowing.

This deceleration is happening almost imperceptibly, at approximately 17 milliseconds per hundred years, although the rate at which it occurs is not perfectly uniform. This has the effect of lengthening our days, but it happens so slowly that it could be as much as 140 million years before the length of a day will have increased to 25 hours.

2. The Earth was once believed to be the centre of the universe.

Due to the apparent movements of the Sun and planets in relation to their viewpoint, ancient scientists insisted that the Earth remained static, whilst other celestial bodies travelled in circular orbits around it. Eventually, the view that the Sun was at the centre of the universe was postulated by Copernicus, though this is also not the case.

3. Earth is the only planet not named after a god.

4. The deepest spot on Earth is under the ocean in the Mariana Trench at 35,813 feet below sea level.

5. It takes about 8 minutes and 19 seconds for light to reach the planet earth from the Sun.

6. There is enough gold in the Earth’s core to cover the entire surface of the Earth in 1.5 feet of the sparkling mineral.

7. Earth’s Amazon rainforest is home to one third of the planet’s land species.

8. Humans have explored only 5% of Earth’s oceans.

9. Lake Baikal in Russia holds 20% of Earth’s unfrozen freshwater. It is the deepest and oldest lake in the world.

10. Earth has about seven quintillion, five hundred quadrillion grains of sand. Still, the known universe contains 70 thousand million, million, million (70 hextillion) stars in the observable universe, which means there about 10,000 stars for every grain of sand.

You can hold about 1 billion grains of sand in your hands.
